Home Tutoring
In-home tutoring allows students and parents to have a more flexible schedule and to create a schedule that works at their convenience. At iSmart, we will pair the appropriate tutor that matches with students’ needs and they will come to the location requested. This allows students to have more time and less stress and to also be in an environment that’s comfortable and optimal for their learning.
- Little to no travel time: As mentioned in the online tutoring section, students have busy schedules. Students have classes, homework, research papers, midterms and finals, extra-curricular activities and events, jobs, familial and personal responsibilities, etc. There can be a lot to balance in a day and a long commute can feel stressful during a busy day. Through home tutoring, students don’t have to worry about a commute. The students are able to build their own tutoring schedule and save time. The tutor will come to the location given and provide tutoring in an environment the student is comfortable with.
- Priming students to learn in the classroom: Through private and home tutoring, students have an opportunity to learn concepts beforehand, making the concept/topic easier to comprehend when taught at school. The pace of school can be quick for some students and some concepts aren’t easily understood. By the time a student has begun to grasp a concept, sometimes classes are moving on to the next chapter or unit. Through home tutoring, students can learn concepts beforehand or have supplementary support when learning concepts. Home tutoring not only helps students learn and understand concepts better, it also instills confidence in students. For a student who has difficulty with a concept, being in a class where a majority of the class is grasping and understanding, it may be intimidating to ask for help because they feel behind. Through home tutoring and learning concepts beforehand, students can feel confident when learning in class.
- The student is the main focus: Teachers in school have an important responsibility in managing a classroom of 20-30 students, and it’s challenging to give every student the amount of attention that they may need. Home tutoring supplements classroom learning and allows a student to be the center of attention. This allows the tutor to concentrate lessons towards the students’ needs. The student will know that they’re not neglected and can express their needs, their challenges, and their goals without judgment and knowing that there’s someone there to help.
- Positive & Comfortable Environment: Home tutoring gives students the privacy and the comfort to learn in a positive environment. A positive and comfortable learning environment is optimal to a students’ success as environmental stimuli can emotionally and cognitively affect how a student learns. In an at home tutoring environment, students can feel comfortable to express their thoughts and share their ideas. This kind of communication that is promoted through a positive environment is important as it allows tutors to know what the needs of the student are, and it allows students to acknowledge their challenges without judgment.In an at-home tutoring environment, there can also be less distractions. Without public distractions such as other students, staff, friends, events, phones/technology, etc., students are able to focus much better when working 1-1 with a tutor at home. It’s much more difficult to hide a phone from the tutor who’s beside the student as it is from the teacher managing 20-30 students!Lastly, students can know that their parents or guardians are close by in an at-home tutoring environment. Not only can this give students relief, parents can also feel relief knowing that the tutor is there to provide progress reports, performance reports, and also to communicate with the parent in regards to recommendations or needs.

Aside from tutoring students, we also assign homework to students. The theory behind tutors giving students homework is not to increase the workload or add pressured deadlines to students, but to increase their opportunities to practise and improve.
